Goal 1: A Church that is Poor and for the Poor
Challenge 1: Since we are Church, what specific action can I take this month to demonstrate that, as a Franciscan, I am for the poor?
Commitments/Actions:
  • 5 people are writing to the PEI government (Robert Ghiz and Valerie Docherty) to urge more committed action in the fight to eradicate poverty.
  • I gave a street person a $15.00 Tim Horton’s card
  • I assisted packing household items for a senior moving from one residence to another
  • I reached out to a single-parent mother by providing transportation for medical attention
  • I will become a member of the Poverty Eradication committee
  • I will pray for the poor
  • I helped serve a meal at the Upper Room (soup kitchen) and mingled with guests
  • I provided financial help for Sr. Joan Macdonald's mission in the Philippines
  • I will inform and instruct myself on issues with the Third World”
  • We have spoken at parish masses and/or sent letters to the federal government to support the Development & Peace campaign that draws attention to the illegal practices of Canadian mining companies in the Global South
  • I contacted Jane Ledwell of the C-BIG campaign (Basic Income Guarantee) to see if she might be available to speak to our fraternity
  • We are thinking that we should do something to help the school breakfast programs
Following up on JPIC in Fraternity, the St. Francis of Assisi Fraternity had a great response to the challenge to anonymously provide answers to what fraternity members could do to demonstrate that they are for the poor. See the responses to the left.

At their February meeting, they focused on Pope Francis’ second goal: A Church that Welcomes and Doesn’t Judge.

Our spiritual father calling us all to conversion - Who are we to judge?
Fraternity members have agreed to try and respond to St. Francis’ act of kissing the leper with the challenge: What specific action can I take this coming month to demonstrate that, as a Franciscan, I am welcoming and non-judgmental of ‘lepers’? At their fraternity meeting, March 9, they will once again collect written anonymous responses.

Thank you for keeping us in the loop Mike, Doug, Louise and Marion. Looking forward to reading the responses next month. As you say, good habits are formed from responding again.
