"The Franciscan Journey" JPIC Supplement

The Franciscan Journey (Updated version 2010) by Lester Bach, OFM Cap.
JPIC supplements by Andrew Conradi, ofs (JPIC National Animator), 2016

    Introduction to Integrating JPIC
           into Initial Formation

The Franciscan Journey (Updated version 2010) by Lester Bach, OFM Cap does include JPIC material but not as in depth as a growing awareness in the Franciscan Family believe should be the case; especially in light of Laudato Si’: On Care for our Common Home (2015) which The Franciscan Journey pre-dates.
Picture
JPIC supplements contain additional material from Understanding JPIC by Andrew Conradi, ofs (former National JPIC Animator) to integrate JPIC into Franciscan Journey at particular relevant places/times in formation. JPIC supplements aim to enrich our understanding of JPIC, Franciscan vision and values and their central place in the Franciscan charism and spirituality.

A supplement is usually 1-7 pages long and its use, although entirely optional at the discretion of the formator, is strongly encouraged. One fraternity’s experience with a couple of the earlier supplements lead formators to say they are useful and at the very least should be assigned as additional reading

Water, Wind, Earth & Fire:
The Christian Practice of Praying with the Elements

June 9, 2020
by Christine Valters Paintner, Phd, REACE, OBLSB
Picture
Organized around "The Canticle of the Creatures" by St. Francis of Assisi, Water, Wind, Earth, and Fire is the first book to consider the ways in which praying with the natural elements can enliven Christian spiritual life. Teacher, artist, and Benedictine oblate Christine Valters Paintner offers concrete suggestions and guided contemplative exercises; for instance, she suggests that readers take time to "watch the sunrise or sunset and breathe in the beauty of the fiery sky. Contemplate what those beginnings and endings have to say in your own life." Readers benefit from Paintner's extensive training in theology and Benedictine spirituality, as well as her unique work in bringing the expressive arts to spiritual direction.

Cry of the Earth, Cry of the Poor

by Leonardo Boff (Translated 1997)
"Cry of the Earth, Cry of the Poor" represents Leonardo Boff's most systematic effort to date to link the spirit of liberation theology with the urgent challenge of ecology. Focusing on the threatened Amazon of his native Brazil, Boff traces the ties that bind the fate of the rain forests with the fate of the Indians and the poor of the land. In this book, readers will find the keys to a new, liberating faith.

Boff insists that the poor must be "the point from which one attempts to conceive of God, Christ, grace, history, the mission of the churches, the meaning of the economy, politics, and the future of societies and of the human being." Concern for the poor provokes concern for the whole of creation, precisely because the poor are the most harmed by both capitalist and socialist abuses of the Earth.

Climate Generation - Awakening to Our Children's Future

February 20, 2020
Picture
by: Lorna Gold

Environmentalist Lorna Gold issues a clarion call to take immediate action on climate change or risk bequeathing a stark legacy to future generations. Lorna shares her personal journey in coming to understand what ‘climate change’ means to her both as an activist and as a mother who is fearful for her children’s prospects in a world that hovers on the brink of destruction. Rather than simply lament the grave situation facing our planet, however, Climate Generation offers the reader hope and a manifesto for change.

This daily prayer book was compiled especially for Third Order Regular Franciscans but is also perfect for all who wish to explore and live the spirit of St. Francis every day. Easy to start and follow, daily morning and evening readings require a minimum of page turns.

Biblical translations include the New Revised Standard Version of the Bible -- Catholic Edition and Psalms Anew.

It is used by many Secular Franciscans in Canada and is much appreciated for its Franciscan content and its ease of use. It introduces us to the many Franciscan saints. We have been using it for several years and love. (George Guimond ofs)

Created in response to an expressed desire on the part of the English-speaking Third Order Regular Franciscans to have a daily prayer book that is clearly Franciscan in character... Regular use of Franciscan Morning & Evening Praise will offer the brothers and sisters of St. Francis a wide selection of readings from foundational Franciscan writings as well as Clarian and Bonaventurian sources.

St Francis and Pope Francis - Prayer, Poverty and Joy in Jesus

                                              by Alan Schreck, PhD
January 2, 2020
Picture
What  do a medieval Italian Catholic and a twenty-first-century pope from Argentina have in common? The certainty that encountering Jesus can change your life and the world. Alan Schreck, author and professor, considers the times and messages of both St. Francis of Assisi and Pope Francis, and invites you to experience the same freedom and joy that they have found in Jesus.

St. Francis and Pope Francis brings together themes that are central to the mission of both these men:
  • Conversion - their stories are different but their message the same: turn to God
  • Prayer - union with Jesus is for everyone
  • Poverty - the imitation of Christ heals and restores
  • Church - faithfulness is the foundation for renewal
  • Mission - the same in every age: share the Gospel
  • Joy - the hallmark of Catholic life, and possible for us today

The Saint and the Sultan - Paul Moses

For many of us, St. Francis of Assisi is known as a poor monk and a lover of animals. However, these images are sadly incomplete, because they ignore an equally important and more challenging aspect of his life -- his unwavering commitment to seeking peace. In The Saint and the Sultan, Paul Moses recovers Francis' s message of peace through the largely forgotten story of his daring mission to end the crusades.

In 1219, as the Fifth Crusade was being fought, Francis crossed enemy lines to gain an audience with Malik al-Kamil, the Sultan of Egypt. The two talked of war and peace and faith and when Francis returned home, he proposed that his Order of the Friars Minor live peaceably among the followers of Islam–a revolutionary call at a moment when Christendom pinned its hopes for converting Muslims on the battlefield.
Picture
The Saint and the Sultan brings to life an episode of deep relevance for all who seek to find peace between the West and the Islamic world.

At the recent Canadian National Spiritual Conference, the theme was, “The 800th Anniversary of the Encounter between Saint Francis and the Sultan”. The speaker, Michael Cusato ofm, a Franciscan historian from the St Bonaventure University, spoke highly of this book. We found a deeper understanding of St Francis after reading it.  Recommended. Also expect some of the proceedings from the National conference to be posted in the near future - FVC

Franciscan View of Creation
   - Learning to Live in a Sacramental World

                                               by Ilia Delio, OFS

The book explores the central focus of our faith tradition and the relationship between the Creator and all of creation. It reflects on the Trinity's glory in everything and the changes in our twenty-first century world. This book provides a fine starting point for reflection on this view, so fundamental to the spiritual vision of Francis and Clare. Dr. Delio traces the theme of God and creation from the time of the conversion of Francis through the first century of Franciscan life and thought.

Can we speak in the midst of our own social and ecclesial location a language of God-with-us, of life, of social witness, a language of the intellect that will help us do what is ours to do in this Christian Catholic Franciscan way of Gospel Life?
Picture
"Francis came to understand that all creation, like himself, is called to give praise and glory to God... Everything spoke to Francis of the infinite love of God. Trees, worms, flowers by the side of the road - all were for him saints gazing up into the face of God. Creation became a place to find God and, in finding God, Francis realized his relationship to all of creation."
      - from A Franciscan View of Creation, page 12.

This short book (56 pages) helped me better understand the relationships between the Franciscan view of creation, the work of justice, peace and care of creation (JPIC), and God the Creator. It's could easily be a study resource for OFS ongoing formation.                                                                                                                                                                                        Recommended.     - George Guimond, FVC

Toward an Eco-Spirituality  by Leonardo Boff

Picture
"An action plan, based on Christianity, to study and understand the challenges and ramifications of the global ecological crisis known as one of the major liberation theologians, Leonardo Boff has long seen the terrible cost of the ecological crisis to the poor. In this engaging brief, he outlines a new vision for human stewardship of the earth. This is an ideal first step to take for individuals and groups to study ecology in a Christian context, and to understand that ecology is no longer a luxury for a few, but an imperative for everyone working for a more just world". - Independent Publishers Group

This is a short book that leaves us with hope. It includes a study guide for sharing, prayer and practice. It would make a wonderful tool for fraternal study and sharing. FVC

The Scandal of Service - Jesus Washes Our Feet  by Jean Vanier

Picture
The Scandal of Service: Jesus Washes Our Feet is a meditation on what Jesus did at the Last Supper when he laid his outer clothing aside and washed and dried his disciples' feet, a task ordinarily performed by the lowly household slave. The author pursues the connection of this gesture of humility and service to Jesus' actions at the supper with the bread and wine, to the beatitudes and the rule of God (and the OFS Rule) in Jesus' ministry, and to the actions of Judas and Peter at the end of Jesus' life. In calling us to follow Jesus' example, the author invites us to break down the barriers which separate human beings and to put ourselves at the service of the weakest among us. This book speaks to all who want the teaching of Jesus to the sewn into the fabric of their daily lives. Novalis

This book speaks to us as Secular Franciscans who are called to "service of the human community" - Rule 16. The book is filled with many insights relating scripture with our call to have preference for the poor. The book also demonstrates the gift of Jean Vanier.- Recommended

Care of Creation

Picture
Care for Creation: A Franciscan Spirituality of the Earth takes both a theological and practical approach to developing a Franciscan spirituality of the earth. Four sections highlight the distinct relationships creation has with the world: incarnation, community, contemplation and conversion. Through reflections, prayers, spiritual exercises and groups activities, the book is practically designed to help us integrate the ecological and theological insights in to our daily lives so that we reconnect with the earth and act in right relationship with her.

Christian Solidarity

Picture
Dan Horan, ofs, challenges readers to look at their lives through the lens of Jesus' suffering and death, in particular, through His last words as related in the Gospels.  The focus throughout is on the immense love of God for human beings, shown in the gift of Jesus, God made flesh. In his preface, Horan writes: “In a world that remains irrevocably shaped by the suffering of the human condition, the misunderstanding between groups and cultures symbolized by the horrific events of September 11, we need to hear Christ's words anew." An ideal Lenten companion, especially during Holy Week, Horan also hopes that The Last Words of Jesus will also serve as a useful meditation throughout the year on the deep love Jesus bore for us in taking on the human condition.
