This is story written by John Lipton, ofs back in 2013, but for whatever reasons never got posted on our website. John has an important message for us that should be shared. So to correct this problem we are posting it now.

“By whatever cruel twist of fate, Lawrence, 62, was a homeless man. He came to Berwick six months ago causing a stir in a small town unused to the sight of a man living on the streets. With colder nights approaching, Lawrence moved into the Kings Transit bus shelter on Commercial Street, where he huddled in a corner with his red sleeping bag and blanket each night. He died early Wednesday morning in a fire police are calling suspicious. No suspects have been arrested, but police have not ruled out foul play. Andrew, founder of Inn from the Cold, which provides shelter for homeless people in the Annapolis Valley, spent time with Lawrence's family, four brothers, four sisters and two half-siblings on Friday. “They are devastated. They've lived for 30 or 40 years fearing when this day would come.”
(An Excerpt from the Halifax newspaper, Chronicle Herald, Oct. 24, 2013)

May God grant Harley eternal rest and PEACE,
as he did not have that in this cruel world.

When Corinne and I entered Berwick on Oct.23, 2013 around 10:00 a.m. to keep our appointments scheduled several months ago I had heard on the car radio of a man who had died in a bus shelter.  But little did I expect to be so devastated by cameras, RCMP officers by the dozen, news media and town folks gathering around the yellow taped off area that encompassed half of the town.

Then our eyes fell upon a blue tarped off area around the bus shelter. Harley's sleeping terminal where his life terminated.   He possessed a sleeping bag and blanket which was wrapped up in a blue plastic garbage bag.  As Harley's story became more apparent as to how he died and why, I asked WHY?? That day and the memory are forever etched in our minds.  We learned of Harley's unfortunate death via speaking with the town folks.

Being Merciful

From the St. Francis of Assisi JPIC Committee
(Mike, Louise, Marion, Charlie & Garry.)   November-December, 2016

Our JPIC focus for much of this year has dealt with various aspects of PEACE.
Pope Francis had declared 2016 as The Jubilee Year of Mercy.

What if you decided to become even more merciful?  With the close of the Jubilee Year of Mercy, we offer some final suggestions.

7. ACCEPT MERCY FROM OTHERS.  It takes humility to admit that we, too, are in need of mercy. When you allow others to be merciful to you, you give them the opportunity to reach outside of themselves and enter into your pain. When that happens, they become instruments of God’s love to heal and comfort you.
In what ways have you accepted mercy from other people?

8. PRAY FOR MERCY.  Pray to become more merciful. Pray also for family members, friends, neighbors, co-workers, and people you know who are in need of mercy. Pray for people who have hurt you. Pray for people around the world who are suffering. Pray that everyone in the world will respond to God’s mercy and, in turn, be merciful to one another.
How will you pray for mercy, and for whom will you pray?
