WATCH: “Homeless” man surprises drivers by handing out cash

When Tim Owen lost his upper-level job at a major media company, he had no leads and no prospects for the future.
He did have a home and a family though. This got him thinking that there were probably others out there who needed help more than he did. Such was the inspiration for his idea to give away his last paycheck, $50 at a time.
“I knew I had to do something crazy,” Owens says. “Not because of the theatrics of it, or not because of this self-fulfilling idea. It had to be a big and bold step in a way I would never forget it.”
Dressed in clothing that made him look like he’d been living on the street, he stood on the median strip of a busy road with a sign that said “It’s better to give than receive.”
Most people were surprised to be handed a $50 bill. Many refused to take it, and some asked for him to give it to someone else in need. Others were grateful for his kindness and generosity.

Worsening drought conditions have reached crisis levels at several Chalice sponsor sites in Kenya and Tanzania. The Government of Kenya has declared a national drought emergency, with 23 of 47 counties affected. The number of people facing food insecurity has more than doubled - from 1.3 million to 2.7 million. Some 357,285 children and pregnant and lactating mothers are acutely malnourished.

In early February heavy rains in Peru resulted in severe hardship for Chalice families in the community of Chiclayo.

The intense rains produced floods which damaged many homes and destroyed others, especially among the poorest of people that live in adobe houses. To add to the misery, many households were hit with the loss of work due to the destruction in their community.

There is a desperate need for assistance with the purchase of food, materials to repair the homes, money to rent temporary housing for those who have lost their homes, and general materials such as clothing and mattresses.

“Too many Christians have decided that the world is bad …”  - Aleteia

...a world hungering for good
Picture
“I think too many Christians have decided that the world is bad … Well, it’s hard to convert people if that’s your stance,” says Father Benedict. “It’s a lot easier to help people to see their own goodness and then bring them in than to point out how bad they are and bring them in.”
The virtues of our times should be low-hanging fruit for Christians. Consider:
  • Today, people care a lot about serving the weak and marginalized. Surely Christian principles about the infinite dignity of every human being can find good soil here.
  • Today’s secularists want to unite the whole world, regardless of race or economic status. There is one place that actually already does this: The Catholic Church. Let’s propose it.
  • People hunger for beauty — and the culture works hard to deliver it in every media imaginable. Even our video games are beautiful. Let’s re-introduce people to the source of the unlimited beauty they hunger for.
And why not, instead of spelling out how formidable the intellectual climate is, start reminding ourselves how weak it is?
  • Secularism is a culture of death that refuses to reproduce. That means self-destruction.
  • Secularism is built on science — but it refuses to recognize the humanity of the unborn or the chromosomal facts of life. It has turned against science. It is undermining its own foundations.
  • Secularism prides itself on tolerance and free speech, but increasingly rejects both in favor of a hyper-sensitive new censorship based on political correctness. This fails its own standards.
Secularism is a kingdom divided against itself.....  READ  THE FULL ARTICLE
