Lent - Food for thought, word and deed

When we were children, we always asked one another "What are you giving up for Lent?" Invariably it involved denying ourselves candy or chocolate. As we grew older, the realization that we benefited from this kind of fasting took the wind out of our sails and we began to question what we could do that had real meaning. "What are you doing for lent? We started going to daily mass before school, fasting and putting the money we would have spent in to the Lenten collection.
What are you doing for Lent? takes on more meaning as we grow in relationship with God and understand and appreciate the sacrifices He made for us so that we could have eternal life with Him. What can we do with a JPIC focus?

Stan Lemieux, St. Patrick's Fraternity, Montreal sent us
Lentsanity, Focus's Social Media campaign to help fellow Catholic students prepare their Lenten resolutions. It's worth a visit for food for thought.

Our National JPIC animator also encourages us to try to link charity to real change. Please visit our Event page to learn more about Development and Peace's (D&P) 2014 Share Lent Campaign. Among the great material they have prepared are two interesting videos: Salt & Light's A New Leaf about West Africa and D&P's  On the Road to Food Sovereignty about Haiti. Both of these link charity to real change i.e. structural sustainable change for the poor.

What are you doing for justice, peace and integrity of creation during Lent? We would love to hear from you. Please use the comment box to tell us what you decide and how you get on.

Peace ... and let it begin with me...
Pax et Bonum!
At the start of every divine liturgy, we pray “For peace throughout the world, for the well-being of God’s holy churches and for the unity of all, let us pray to the Lord.”

When we read the newspapers, watch the TV, go on-line, we realise that now more than ever, our prayers for PEACE are sorely needed.

Please visit our Peace page and join the peace prayer appeal from the Ukrainian Catholic Archeparchy of Winnipeg.

Animate for Peace, for JPIC...

2/18/2014

A few days ago, we received a suggestion from Sherrill Guimond to check out the 12 weeks of Franciscan Peace created by Carolyn D. Townes, OFS, National JPIC Animator, St. Katharine Drexel Region. So, we did and we have included it and other links to inspiring JPIC animation from Carolyn in our Formation section.

What really struck us was the definition of
JPIC Animator on Carolyn's Animate Peace Blog. When we consider that an animator in the Franciscan sense gives life to the charism of Saint Francis who lived and breathed the Gospel, in the footsteps of Jesus, inciting Gospel-inspired action by his example, there is no doubt that we, as Franciscans are called to give life to the issues of JPIC and by God's grace, encourage right action. For Carolyn, that means starting by cultivating peace within.
And for you?

When you use Carolyn's 12 weeks of Franciscan Peace individually or in fraternity, please let us know how you get on by using the Contact page or via email. We will include feedback on Spotlight and let Carolyn know too.

Happy St. Valentine's Day - the Joy of "Yes" forever

"Courtesy is the sister of charity, it extinguishes hatred and kindles love", St. Francis
The other is a gift from God - Give Thanks
No-one is perfect - Apologize & forgive
Pope Francis, met with ten thousand engaged couples from around the world today, gathered to consider the vocation of marriage, with the theme “The joy of 'Yes' forever”, organized by the Pontifical Council for the Family. The starting point was that couples marry to face problems together, and concludes that it is still possible to take the risk and courageously promise “forever”, because "forever" brings joy and allows us to look to the future with hope.
The Pope answered three main concerns:
  1. Fear of "forever": Couples must start from the premise that "love is a relationship, ... a growing reality, ... built in the same way that we build a house. ... together, not alone! … on the rock of true love, the love that comes from God, stable and lasts forever... that becomes the locus of affection, help, hope and support. The quality is important and couples were advised to entrust themselves to the Lord daily to renew their love and overcome every difficulty.
  2. Living together: is “an art, a patient, beautiful and fascinating journey … which can be summarised in "please", "thank you" and "sorry".
  3. Marriage should be a Christian celebration: “What happened at Cana two thousand years ago, happens in reality at every wedding feast. It is the presence of the Lord, who reveals Himself and the gift of His grace, that will render your marriage full and profoundly true. … So, the wedding should be sober and emphasize what is truly important: joy in the Lord's blessing upon the couple's love.
Such joy and promise!
Messages of joy and hope for everyone of us!

Let us pray daily that the Holy Spirit guides our Franciscan Family in our JPIC relationship with the world: forever seeing and being thankful for the gifts from God, seeking to make it better
where damage has been or is being done, in joyful one-ship with God who will light our way, encourage us in times of need and fill our hearts and minds with the resources to say "yes" like Mary and "do" what God is asking of us - our gift of "love" in the world, in our own individual capacities.
