Ecosystems support all life on Earth. The healthier our ecosystems are, the healthier the planet - and its people. The UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration aims to prevent, halt and reverse the degradation of ecosystems on every continent and in every ocean. It can help to end poverty, combat climate change and prevent a mass extinction. It will only succeed if everyone plays a part. Watch this film which begins the Decade on Ecosystem Restoration.

A Hidden Life

Based on real events, A HIDDEN LIFE is the story of an unsung hero, Franz Jägerstätter, who refused to fight for the Nazis in World War II. When the Austrian peasant farmer is faced with the threat of execution for treason, it is his unwavering faith and his love for his wife Fanni and children that keeps his spirit alive.
This is a new release. Check your local cinema for showing dates

Since posting this we have learned that it may be some time before you get to see the film in your area, but keep checking. At the International Chapter in 2017, there was a presentation on Franz Jägerstätter by some people who were working on his cause for sainthood. It was by  all counts a great presentation. He was a Secular Franciscan. Attached are the notes from the CIOFS website.
The presentation was translated from the German.

You may know the Franciscans as great preachers and humble servers, but do you know that we have our own intellectual tradition? For years we have made distinct contributions to Catholic theology. (9:00 min)

Climate change: Europe's melting glaciers | DW Documentary

8/3/2019

It is far too late to save the Alpine glaciers. And now, the dangers caused by tons of melting ice are rising sharply. Every year, climate change is destroying two of the currently 70 square kilometers of glaciers left in the Alps. The permafrost in the Alps is thawing, and transforming what used to be sturdy slopes into loose screes. In addition, climate change is leading to significantly more extreme weather conditions every year, while heavy rainfall causes serious erosion...

Pope Francis - A Man of His Word

6/16/2019

Wim Wenders' new documentary, "Pope Francis - A Man of His Word," is intended to be a personal journey with Pope Francis, rather than a biographical documentary about him. The pope's ideas and his message are central to this documentary, which sets out to present his work of reform and his answers to today's global questions. From his deep concern for the poor and wealth inequality, to his involvement in environmental issues and social justice, Pope Francis engages the audience face-to-face and calls for peace. (Rotten Tomatoes)

We have just watched this film and found it excellent. It has given us a much better appreciation for this man and his work in the Church. It makes us proud to be Secular Franciscans. Highly recommended.  - George Guimond ofs, FVC

Child labour, poverty and terrible working conditions lie behind the sugar you eat.
Dominican Republic: Modern Day Sugarcane Slavery
On the Caribbean island of the Dominican Republic, tourists flock to pristine beaches, with little knowledge that a few miles away thousands of dispossessed Haitians are under armed guard on plantations harvesting sugarcane.
Cutting cane by machete, they work 14 hour days, 7 days a week, frequently without access to decent housing, electricity, clean water, education, healthcare or adequate nutrition. The Price of Sugar (90 mins, narrated by Paul Newman, 2007, 1 hr 29 mins) follows a charismatic Anglo-Spanish priest, Father Christopher Hartley, as he organizes some of this hemisphere’s poorest people, challenging the powerful interests profiting from their work.

This film raises key questions about where the products we consume originate, at what human cost they are produced and ultimately, where our responsibility lies.

Disruption (2014)

2/26/2019

Description: We're the first generation to feel the devastating planetary consequences of climate change, and the last generation that can do something about it. Why do we do so little when we know so much? Disruption unflinchingly investigates to find the answer, laying bare the terrifying science, the relentless industry special interests, and the broken political process failing to respond adequately to this ecological, social, and moral catastrophe. The film also takes us behind the scenes of the effort to organize the largest climate rally in history during the UN's 2014 world climate summit. This is the story of our unique, tipping-point moment in history. The film makes a compelling case for bold action strong enough to tip the balance to build a clean energy future.
NOTE: Neither PF Pictures nor 350.org make any money from DVD sales; the cost for ordering a DVD just covers production and shipping via CreateSpace/Amazon. Furthermore, Disruption may only be screened in non-commercial settings with no ticketing fees, no advertising, no profits. Commercial screenings are strictly forbidden.
