Sister Alison McCrary - from Lawyer to Nun

9/26/2019

For Sister Alison McCrary, a community lawyer and activist in New Orleans, joining a religious order was an act of resistance: "The world needs more prophetic voices, and making vows of poverty, celibacy, and obedience in a society that values power, money, and sex is a radical thing to do."
Sister Alison gives us a tour of the Treme, the historically black neighborhood where she ministers, and explains how her vows help her serve her community.

In March 2018, IPBES launched four Assessment Reports on #biodiversity and #EcosystemServices - one each for #Africa, the #Americas, #AsiaPacific and #Europe and #Central Asia. Together they are the most important expert contribution of the past decade to the state of knowledge about nature and nature's contributions to people.                      See the video

Dear brothers,
May the Lord give you peace!
This year I would like to share with all of you a message inthe context of the celebrations of 800 years of the encounter between Francis of Assisi and the Sultan of Egypt al-Malik al-Kamil. This commemoration has offered the Church and the Order an extraordinary opportunity to reflect on and study the topic of open and respectful dialogue with Islam and, of course, with other religious faiths.

I want to invite you to experience the mystery of the Passion, Death and Resurrection of the Lord considering this event based on what I wrote last 7th January in a letter to the entire Order about this important anniversary. It urges us to abandon fear and literally open the doors of our mind, allowing God to operate in an unprecedented way in the hearts of men and women of good will who fight without distinction to promote social justice, moral good, peace and freedom to the benefit of all (cf. Nostra Aetate 3).                                                     READ FULL TEXT

Prayer, service highlight week-long event
It was a time for prayer, for social service, for evangelizing and for raising funds to drill water wells in Africa. It was the 3rd European OFS and YouFra Congress, which took place in Lithuania from 20 to 26 August, 2018. A total of 126 participants from 23 national fraternities gathered at Kaunas, along with 30 organizers and volunteers from Lithuania. The main aim of the Congress was to deepen the relationship with the Holy Spirit and to experience a spiritual conversion through prayer, social services and evangelization.  SEE THE FULL NEWSLETTER

For those interested in JPIC: it mentions the main theme of the Ist Pan African OFS/Youfra Congress (July 2018): "OFS and Youfra at the service of reconciliation, peace and social justice". The link between youth and JPIC is critical for humanity's spiritual well being, peace on earth and the health of Earth. - FVC

Since the beginning of 2015, Europe has been facing a great migration crisis. Solidarity with and assistance to refugees has been limited. The issue has divided Europe. Misunderstandings abound regarding the intentions and behaviors of various groups of migrants. Refugees from countries affected by armed conflicts can count on the assistance of European countries, including Poland. However, this assistance is limited.      Read their newsletter below.

Biodiversity can be defined as the variety of plant and animal life in the world or in a particular habitat (oxforddictionaries.com).

Usually, the presence of a variety of species is a sign of a healthy environment. The elimination of a species or the introduction of an invasive species could cause a collapse of that ecosystem. Humans depend on the existence of these ecosystems much more than we understand.

In Laudato Si, Pope Francis, speaks about the importance of biodiversity. To reread sections #32 - 42, click here.

January is Human Trafficking Awareness Month
Human Trafficking Awareness Month (January) is dedicated to raising awareness of sexual slavery and human trafficking worldwide.
Today, there are between 21-30 million people enslaved in the world, more than at any time in human history.
Every day, modern slavery can be recognized everywhere in the world: children become soldiers, young women are forced into prostitution, migrant workers are exploited in the workforce and children and adults are trafficked for the extraction of body organs.

The Stop Trafficking Newsletter cosponsored by the Felician Sisters of North America may be accessed by clicking here. January's edition highlights the role of the internet in human trafficking, both good and bad!!

The January Reflection from United States Catholic Sisters Against Human Trafficking may be accessed by clicking here. This month's reflection, Study, Pray, Act is by Carol Davis, OP.
