1. MUSICAL NOTATION
1.1. A new musical score

Advent is almost over, and Christmas is already upon us! Only a few days separate us from the end of the year 2020, but already we can say that it has been a very particular year. Over the last few months, it seems that we have experienced as much as we normally would in a decade. Because of issues such as the virus, political changes, protests in so many countries, tensions, wars, intolerance, environmental issues, chaotic streams of information, our experience is that the world has become darker and, as a result of factors that include assorted lockdowns, also more closed [see Pope Francis, Fratelli tutti (FT), Chapter one: Dark Clouds over a Closed World, nos. 9-55]. It is precisely at this moment in history that Pope Francis has given us his Encyclical, Fratelli tutti.....

It is an important message from the six Ministers General of the Franciscan Family including Tibor Kauser ofs

Friar Ed Debono, OFM on World Day of Prayer

9/7/2020

Sept. 1, the World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation, marked the beginning of the Season of Creation.  It extends to Oct. 4th, the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi.  During this time Christians of all different faith communities will unite in prayer and action on behalf of creation and our planet and invite everyone to participate.

Pope Francis began his encyclical on "Care of our Common Home." with words "Laudate Si', me Signore."  "Praise be to you, my Lord", the first few words in Italian of the Canticle of the Creatures.

In the Canticle of the Creatures, St. Francis reminds us that our common home is like a sister with whom we share our life.  Our common home is also like a mother who opens her arms to all. "Praise be to you, my Lord, through our Sister, Mother Earth, who sustains and governs us and who procures various fruits with coloured flowers and herbs."

Mother Earth is crying out to us because of the harm we                      have inflicted on her by our irresponsible use.
Picture
Mother Earth is crying out to us because of the harm we have inflicted on her by our irresponsible use.  Humankind is abusing the natural goods of Mother Earth which God, our Creator, has, endowed her.

We have misunderstood for too long a time, the Book of Genesis and have translated the message to give us dominion over the earth.  A misunderstanding that has to be undone.

We have come to see ourselves as masters of minerals, fossil fuels, forests and water.  We see governments, corporations and businesses as being entitled to plunder Mother Earth wherever, whenever and however they will.

The face of Mother Earth is wounded by fires to clear the forests for profit, by mercury deposited in our waterways, fossil fuel smoke polluting the air.  All these destructive practices affect water, air, land and all forms of life, plants, creatures of the sea, animals, birds and human life.

Because the earth is being mistreated we are experiencing climate change.

Unite in prayer and action on behalf of creation and our planet and invite everyone to participate.

Fr. Pierre was the director of SIAF with which Franciscan Voice Canada has partnered in our collective JPIC work. This is a big loss for SIAF. May he rest eternally with our Lord - FVC

A Word from the Provincial Minister

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

HAPPY EASTER!

May our hearts be in celebration on this Easter day, for Christ has risen! At the heart of the Covid-19 pandemic that is costing the lives of so many women and men across the globe—and forcing billions of people to confinement—let us take a moment to stop and contemplate the face of Jesus. May his light restore our confidence and bring us healing!

As we move into the New Year, are we the same old people or are we really open to undertaking changes that can make a difference in our world?

In his encyclical Laudato Si, Pope Francis states, "Many things have to change course, but it is we

human beings above all who need change" (202). He also states: "The issue of environmental degradation challenges us to examine our lifestyle" (206).

The call here is for us to make real changes in how we live, no matter how small. We have grown in awareness and have taken steps personally and communally but can we go deeper.

What changes can you still make....eliminating single use plastic water bottles, eliminating styrofoam, recycling, using greener cleaning products, adjusting food habits, spreading the word about the need to care for the earth, engaging in political advocacy...
Consider our Franciscan call to live in relationship with all of creation.

MERRY CHRISTMAS!“… Only those who are steeped in the logic of God’s ‘Incarnational’ love will be able to reach out to those otherwise discounted and excluded: migrants and refugees; those who profess other religious ideas and practices; those who we are told are our ‘enemies’ when, in the logic of God’s Incarnation, they are our brothers and sisters; a wounded creation, exhausted and under threat from unbridled and immoral exploitation…”
